Z820 mobo hack. anyone?

hi gang.
the z800 mobo hack was an inspiring read. ive decided to bite a bullet and get z820 mobo. it just happens i have two 2670 (not v2) and bunch of registered ram available.
ive gone through hp papers and found NOTHING similar to the z800 pinouts posted by Andy.
there is contrary information on the hp forum: one saying the powersupply and the pinouts r identical for both z800 and z820 the other says the opposite.
so, the very first step for me is to identify the pinouts and/or understand if the z800 shares truly identical powersupply with z820, hence - i could use Andy's hack guide.
as an alternative, there is:

Hello Davidk!

The power supplys are different, I bought a 1125w. The main differences are that the Z800 has 5v standby (5VSB) and Z820 11v, making it incompatible  with all ATX power supplys of market. The power supply starts without even being connected to the motherboard, which means that it PS_ON pin is unlike ATX it shuts down the source, would be a PS_OFF.
I measure the voltages of 3 connectors (C1, C2 and C3), below are the outputs, they were numbered by looking at the front of connectors, left to right:

X - missing pin
S - unknown signal pin, there are 4 of them, three of them should be the PS-OFF, PSU_ID, PWR_OK, the last i have no idea.

Before you can connect the following cables are necessary:

HP Z820 Memory and CPU Power Cable New 647111-001 - cpu and memory power.
HP Z820 Motherboard and ODD Power Cable Assembly 647108-001 - power the board/memory fans.
HP Z820 Power Button with Speaker New 644320-005 - do not know if the power button is the same as the z800. It has a great chance of being equal!

If someone buys the cables please share the pinout!

From the maintenance guide was possible to extract the following information:

C1 - Has three SATA power connectors (D1, D2 and D3), 2 IDE (D4 and D5) and a HDD bay (H1) these are not important, it what matters is the P1 output that goes to motherboard .
C2 - Is just three outputs PCI-standard and strength so it is an easy out to do.
C3 - Are the connectors P2, P3 and P4 that feed both CPU and memory.

After we get the pinout of these connectors, will be possible to connect the card to the original source. If we discover the function of the mistery pins I think it will be possible to make changes to connect to a common  ATX power supply.

I'm thinking of buying a couple of these on ebay to begin reverse engineering them. I have a couple of questions for anyone who owns these boards:


  • How similar are the pinouts (fan, mb power, cpu power, etc) to the Z800 ones. Can you post a picture of the original loom from the z820 case?

  • Can you provide overall dimensions for the motherboard (possibly hole locations). This makes it easier for people to build their own cases, etc. If you can get a drawing to me I can produce a dwg/pdf for reference?

  • What tools and what steps for validation have you performed for the pinouts that you have at the moment?



If we can get #1 answered, we may be able to punt the pinouts over to the chinese companies to make ATX_PSU<->Z800 converters, and if we're *super* lucky they may be compatible :).

  • The pinouts are completely different. I do not have access to a Z820, just have a motherboard and power supply.
    I post pictures of them tomorrow.
    For make a z820 mod you need buy the original power supply and motherboard, and someone needs to buy and extract this cable connections:

  • The board size is 33,1cm x 36,2cm, tomorrow i make the measure of holes.


  • I got the pinouts using a multimeter in continuity mode. Measure the continuity between the power supply housing and the pins to find the GND ( ground lines).
    Then I turn on the source (connected to power because it activates alone) and measure the voltage in the pins. Pins that were in near 0v and were not GND, were identified as signal.

Both Z800 and Z820 850W PSU have different PN# That may explains the different pin out.

In the end I bought a Z820 barebone, to save cost and time. I'll try to do a trace on the main harness loom when I get a chance.

Power supply are incompatible, lousy sellers!  Z800 have 5v sb, z820 have 11vsb, different pinout too.
I buy the cables:
HP Z820 Memory and CPU Power Cable New 647111-001 - cpu and memory power.

and make the mod using the original power supply.
the front panel pinout is posted in HP forum.

hi Dan,

Please the front usb 2.0, usb 3.0 and 1394 have a grounded pin to detect the presence of the cables. Would you like to check which ones are?

dear glauder - bravo and grazie!
have u considered taking that original PS apart to clone it with regular PS? i can imagine more then just 5-11v difference, so, someone tech savvy should give a try.
