I just built an open-air rig (for mining) with my Z820. Everything is fine, except the computer won't boot without errors if any of its many fans are not connected. I have found other uses for the front and rear chassis fans so they remain connected. The last remaining fans to connect are the memory fans - which I don't need since I only have 1 DIMM in each bank, so I really don't need the external cooling with the open air layout.
If anyone can give me a solution to fool the bios into thinking there are fans connected into the 4 pin memory fan connectors, that would be great.

You said that you met a ram error,maybe you didn't insert the dimm in a correct slot.

I'm using a Z800 Mainboard with an adapter cable on a standard 1200W Power supply. I want to install 3x 980ti GPUs in the machine, but the one in Slot 7 always gives me an error 12 ("not enough resources") in windows.
It does work as a single GPU in slot 7, but when I add even one other GPU, it throws this error. I can use two GPUs in the assignated PCIe slots, but I need three to work.
I played around with disabling everything I don't need and PCIE Adapter/Compute Settings in the BIOS, but to no avail.

don´t use your fan (6 pin) without changing the connections pin 5 and 6 and 1.
You could kill the mobo, I had it 5 min switched on and it was very "warm" in the near of the fan.

During the first switch on was the same problem like Z440 Mobo,
no screen , boot precedure stopped with memory error.
But the A99-a has a very nice manual and I was able to make
a bios update.... The system runs stabil. I was happy to use my
reg ECC DDR4 2400 RAM. Installing Windows 10 64 bit with USB-Stick
where without complications with the ssd corsair MP500 240 GB.

Motherboard Asus A99-a
Intel Xeon e5-1620 v4
Cpu fan noctua 14cm
Ram Kingston reg ecc KTH-PL424 2 x 8 GB
Corsair MP500 240 GB SSD with adapter for m.2 scsi
Monitor lg 43ud79-b

Power supply atx 550W
ATX Tower (old)

If pin 5 would be RPM for second fan
If pin 6 would be PWM for second fan
It would be not the best idea to connect with pin 1,
May be it's better leave pin 6 and connect pin 3 with pin 5
