Title: z800 Revision 001 Booting with E5620
Post by: eksu on July 25, 2017, 11:46:09 pm
I've got a z800, first revision (boot block dated 01/30/09) that's booting off of E5620. Has anyone else heard of this? I'm trying to figure out what CPU I should upgrade towards.

Let me know if anyone's ran into a similar situation or read anything online.

You should be fine with all 55xx quad-core CPUs. You will run into problems if you try the hex-core 56xx CPUs. People are reporting that most problems are with dual-CPU combinations and you can probably use a single hex-core CPU without any problems.

Do you have a particular upgrade in mind?

Thanks for your response Andy. I'm currently booting off of dual 56xx quad core CPUs, so I was wondering if anyone else has seen a board like mine in the wild that works with them.

It might be worth mentioning it has a sticker on it that says 'Property of Hewlett-Packard Company' 'Not For Sale' etc. (attached) and it originally had a Intel Confidential Nehalem-EP 130W w5580 in it.

I want to upgrade it as high as I think it can go, ideally a X5678 (Quad) or X5690. At the low end of my expectations, it might just make sense to get a second W5580. or a X5650.

Let me know if you have any thoughts. I upgraded the BIOS a while back to revision 3.57 I believe.
